What is ECD?

Extended Childhood Disorder is the name that has been given by Dr. Robert Epstein to the behavior seen in today's youth. In his words, ECD is characterized by "feelings of hopelessness, anger, and a lack of control over one's life." This is the result of the artificial extension of childhood which has occurred in our society, made worse by the perception of adolescents as children and the negative stereotypes of young people which are perpetuated in the media. Many modern teens are depressed, suicidal, angry, and rebellious. They are pressured to grow up but not allowed to act like grown-ups. They are trapped in a world of teen culture created by companies and media giants who engage in "teensploitation" for profit. American adolescents are subject to curfew laws and unable to drink, drive, sign contracts, or make medical decisions. They are searched and treated with suspicion, distrust, and disrespect at school, and are often treated like irresponsible children at home. Their natural evolutionary drive to be independent and productive is quashed by their environment, leading to an enormous loss of potential.
GROW is a movement dedicated to eliminating ECD and bringing happiness and success to adolescents without subjecting them or their families to the emotional trauma and distress now commonly associated with this stage of life. See "For Teens" and "For Parents" on this site for steps to take in order to prevent and combat ECD. For more information on ECD and adolescence, see the "Recommended Reading" and "Links" pages.
